In many contrasting scenes cameras fail to "see" what people see. In brightly-lit areas "burn" and the dark become almost black. To approximate the outcome of the photo to the normal human eye perception you have to use HDR techniques.
HDR photography is mainly used for interior shots. Usually photographers do the so-called bracketing (3-9 shoots - from very dark to very bright) and then mix photos with software. In this examples I do not use a bracketing, but only software manipulation with RAW files. Only in extremely contrasting scenes I use bracketing.
